Volga-Dnepr Airlines' freighter makes first landing on Antarctic airfield

A Volga-Dnepr Airlines IL-76TD-90VD freighter has completed its first landing on an ice airfield in Antarctica, touching down at the Novolazarevskaya Antarctic Research Station airfield.

Flight checks were performed in order to incorporate amendments to the IL-76TD-90VD's airplane flight manual (AFM) for ice airfield operations. Following amendments to the AFM, the aircraft will be approved to operate to Antarctica airfields, a company statement said.

The aircraft, which was flown by a joint crew led by two honoured test pilots of the Russian Federation, completed a series of runs on the runway to check performance capability and define the engine reverse thrust application range.

Sales director of Volga-Dnepr UK, Georgy Sokolov, said: "Active exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic regions is currently underway, and with the IL-76TD-90VD airplane meeting ICAO's (International Civil Aviation Organization) existing and advanced requirements, and, most importantly, being fitted with environment-friendly engines, it will provide a reliable transport solution for our customers."
