Port of Virginia sees container throughput reach record high in October
THE US east coast port of Virginia handled a record 233,466 TEU in October, an increase of 5.6 per cent compared to the same month a year earlier.
Through the first 10 months of the year, the port's container throughput rose 8.5 per cent, or 167,761 TEU, ahead of a year earlier, reported IHS Media.
Virginia's higher volume comes as the port continues efforts to improve operational efficiency. "We have to maintain this level of productivity as we begin to push for further improvements," CEO John Reinhart was quoted as saying.
He said programmes under way, including a new north gate being built at Norfolk International Terminal, "will push the needle toward greater productivity and service capability."
In October rail units rose by 9.3 per cent year on year to 43,062 moves; truck volume was up 3.9 per cent; breakbulk tonnage increased by 26 per cent; and vehicle units were up 217 per cent to 4,325.
