UPS to invest heavily in upgrading and expanding infrastructure
UPS plans to triple the size of its ground package sorting facility in Louisville and also expand its logistics operation in South Carolina.
Outside the US, the express and logistics giants also plans to build a new package sorting centre at DP World's Logistics Park in the United Kingdom.
The company's existing processing centre, known as the "Centennial Hub," located in Louisville's Renaissance South Business Park, is to be increased from 257,000 square-feet to 838,000 square-feet with construction scheduled to commence next year.
The US$300 million expansion will double the package processing rates at the facility once the work is completed by 2018, reported Air Cargo World.
The facility will be retrofitted with automated conveyors to move packages through the sort process, capturing shipping data and routing parcels to proper load positions. E-commerce and traditional retail package volume arrives in Louisville from area distribution centres.
The company is also investing $185 million in the construction of a package-sorting facility at DP World's Logistics Park, adjacent to the London Gateway Seaport. The 344,000-square-foot building is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2017.
In addition, the company's 315,000-square-foot package sorting facility adjacent to Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina is to be outfitted with fully automated sorting capabilities. The new upgrades are expected to go into operation by the end of the year.
