Ship-to-shore cranes arrives at Mersey for Liverpool2
PEEL Ports in the United Kingdom has taken delivery of five ship-to-shore gantry cranes built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) for the GBP300 million (US$462 million) Liverpool2 deepwater terminal.
The cranes were transported on the 140 metre-long ZPMC heavylift vessel, Zhen Hua 23.
Chief executive of Peel Ports, Mark Whitworth, said in a press statement: "This is a truly unique day in Liverpool's long maritime history. The spectacular sight of these cranes sailing up the Mersey to the Liverpool2 site is unprecedented."
The five ship-to-shore cranes are the first of 17 cranes ordered in April 2014 in a deal worth GBP100 million. Along with 12 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes, they are part of phase 1 of the project, reported Lloyd's List Containers.
A further three STS cranes and 10 CRMGs will be delivered in phase 2 for a cost of GBP50 million. These are also being built and delivered by ZPMC.
The Liverpool2 deepwater terminal phase 1 was originally scheduled to open in the fourth quarter but that deadline has been postponed until January 2016, according to a Peel Ports spokeswoman.
Liverpool2 will allow the Port of Liverpool to handle two 13,500-TEU vessels simultaneously. Currently the port can accommodate ships of up to 4,500 TEU.
