Petlim port in Turkey due to open in spring 2016

THE Petlim container port in Turkey is to begin operations in spring 2016, SOCAR Turkey's CEO Kenan Yavuz told a meeting of the Izmir Department of the Maritime Chamber of Commerce.

Petlim port is intended to become an alternative to the port of Piraeus in Greece for container traffic in the region. Development of the port required an investment of US$400 million, reported Azerbaijan Business Centre.

"All the investment issues have been resolved. Opening of Petlim port is scheduled for spring 2016," Mr Yavuz said through his pages in social networks.

The port is designed mainly to handle the transshipment cargo of petrochemical company Petkim, which has a 70 per cent stake holding in the port, while Goldman Sachs holds the remaining 30 per cent equity interest. SOCAR hold a stake of 60 per cent in Petkim Holding itself.

Petlim will be able to handle ships of up to 11,000 TEU and will open with an annual handling capacity of 1.5 million TEU. APM Terminals will run the port for 28 years.
