East African, Arabian war zones mean growth for Nairobi's Astral Aviation

NAIROBI's Astral Aviation is adding to air cargo flights in response to rising demand from war zones in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

With intra-African load factors increasing to Juba, South Sudan; Mogadishu, Somalia and Mwanza, Tanzania, Astral Aviation has added freighter flights, reports Atlanta area Air Cargo World.

With the closure of the Juba International Airport on weekends, Astral will now operate three weekly frequencies from Nairobi to the South Sudanese capital to accommodate for the increase in cargo.

An additional flight from Nairobi to Mogadishu increases frequency to twice a week, catering to the increase in UN military needs. From Mogadishu, Astral said it will be able to provide an on-forwarding service to Hargeisa, Somalia and Djibouti.

With an increase in mining operations to Tanzania, Astral said it has increased Nairobi-Mwanza flights to thrice a week. Astral has weekly flights from Nairobi to Dar-es-salaam, Zanzibar, Moroni, Entebbe, Kigali, Pemba, London and Liege.

Charter flights have increased from Astral's Nairobi hub to Bangui and Sana'a in Yemen providing relief-related goods.

"We have been overwhelmed with the demand for aid and relief cargo from Nairobi and Djibouti to the rebel held Yemeni capital of Sanaa, and have performed in excess of a dozen flights," said Collins Oloo, charter manager.

"Astral will continue to offer on-demand charters with sufficient capacity on its fleet."
