South Carolina ports see September's container volumes rise 11pc to 167,549 TEU
SOUTH Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) handled 167,549 TEU in September, up 11.1 per cent compared to the same month last year.
Since the 2016 fiscal year began in July, SCPA's container throughput has risen by 9.5 per cent against the same period last year to total 513,299 TEU.
"Our growth is indicative of broad-based strength across all market segments," SCPA CEO Jim Newsome was quoted as saying in a report by American Journal of Transportation (AJOT).
"While our volumes are likely to see more modest growth than last fiscal year, we expect to continue to experience increases above the US port market average."
Non-containerised cargo during the first quarter of the fiscal year amounted to 356,746 pier tonnes. In September, the port of Charleston moved 81,137 tonnes of breakbulk cargo and the port of Georgetown handled 30,360 tonnes.
The Inland Port achieved 7,214 rail moves during the same month, bringing fiscal year-to-date volume to 22,103 moves.
