Baltimore tops June box record by 8.6pc with 86,149 TEU lifted in August
THE Port of Baltimore public terminals, posted an all-time monthly record 86,149 TEU throughput in August, up 8.6 per cent from the record 79,644 TEU volume set in June, the port authorities revealed.
Baltimore is ranked ninth for the total dollar value of cargo and 13th for cargo tonnage for all US ports, reported the American Journal of Transportation of Plymouth, Massachusetts.
"The Port of Baltimore continues to demonstrate why it's so important to the overall economic success of our state," said Maryland state Governor Larry Hogan.
"I congratulate all the hard working people at the port who helped make this record breaking month possible. This is another great example of how we are working to make Maryland open for businesses," he said.
Container shipping at the Port of Baltimore is up 12 per cent year on year. Last month, the port announced a record for the most general cargo in a fiscal year as containers.
The Port of Baltimore's public marine terminals had a record year in 2014 for general cargo, autos and containers. Overall, public and private marine terminals saw 29.5 million tonnes of international cargo cross its docks valued at US$52 billion.
Baltimore is ranked number one among all US ports for handling cars and light trucks, farm and construction machinery, imported forest products, imported sugar and imported aluminum.
