Global air cargo market set to grow annually by 6pc to 2019: report

AIRLINES aim to increase revenue through acquisition route to enter the global air cargo industry, forecast to expand 5.9 per cent annually over the next five years because of e-commerce, says Chicago-based SandlerResearch.

One of the major trends emerging in the air cargo market is the increase in airline research, said the study, resulting in the identification of new transportation routes and strategies in the market.

According to the report, online retail stores, especially online fashion stores, are a major source of revenue for the market, a statement from the analysts said.

The report notes that air cargo faces competition from various modes of surface transport such as rail because it is comparatively inexpensive and much easier to operate resulting in greater acceptance among shippers.

The major players analysed in the report are Cathay Pacific Cargo, FedEx, Emirates and United Parcel Service (UPS).

Other companies mentioned include Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, British Airlines, Cargolux, China Airlines, Delta Airlines, Deutsche Post DHL, Etihad Airways, Korean Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Singapore Airlines and TNT Express.

The in-depth market analysis gained inputs from industry experts and covers the markets in Africa, Asia Pacific, CIS, Europe, the Middle East, North and South America.

Another of the company's research reports entitled, Global Air Cargo Security and Screening Systems Market 2015-2019, highlights that the air cargo industry is vulnerable to terror attacks.

It cites that in 2010, two packages shipped from Yemen to Chicago were discovered to contain explosive materials, and in 2013 terrorist attacks rose by 43 per cent worldwide.

The report states that air cargo requires efficient and advanced cargo screening systems to handle the increasing volume, and provide enhanced security measures.
