DHL flies record-holding 1930s Napier Railton race car to HK motor show

DHL GLOBAL Forwarding, a major provider of air, sea and road freight services, has delivered the Napier Railton, one of the world's most renowned antique race cars, the UK to centre stage at the Hong Kong Classic motor show.

The Napier Railton's claim to fame was its 12-cylinder, 24-litre engine - the same used in 1930's fighters - which saw it break world speed records, including the Brooklands Outer Circuit Lap in 1935 - uncontested to this day.

The car's heritage and special requirements, including the use of a unique petrol and lubricating oils specific to its age, made expert handling an utmost priority for DHL and the Hong Kong Classic's organisers.

"To transport such a prized piece, you need state-of-the-art capabilities and a solid track record for getting highly delicate items to the finish line on time," said DHL Global Forwarding Asia Pacific CEO Kelvin Leung.

"Ensuring the integrity of such a delivery encompasses not just the car itself, but also a range of supply and maintenance needs that have to be accounted for the entire duration of the trip," he said.

DHL transported the two-ton Napier Railton by road from its permanent exhibit at Brooklands Museum to Heathrow Airport, followed by a direct air service from London to Hong Kong and road transfer to Hong Kong's Central district.

The Napier Railton joins more than 100 other vintage, experiment and concept cars and motorcycles at the Hong Kong Classic motor show.

"The Napier Railton's historical significance means it can only be allowed out of Britain for a maximum of three months at a time," said David Riach , founder and managing director of Straight Six Automotive.
