PSA lays foundation stone for BMCT container terminal in Mumbai

SINGAPORE's global port operator PSA International has laid the foundation stone of its wholly owned Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) before Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and a large ministerial entourage.

The ceremony marks an important chapter in the development of the fourth container terminal in Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JN Port), India, said the PSA statement.



"Today's ceremony marks a key milestone in the joint efforts between PSA and JNPT to develop this new container terminal in Jawaharlal Nehru Port, India's biggest container gateway," said PSA International CEO Tan Chong Meng. 



"The Indian government has identified sustainable economic growth as a key pillar in the country's 'Vision 2022' and the development of BMCT, PSA's latest port project in India, will help facilitate that," he said. 



"I wish to thank JNPT and other stakeholders in India for the opportunity to work alongside them to develop this monumental project in India," said Mr Tan.



Also attending was Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Shipping Minister Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Maharashtra state Governor, Shri CH Vidyasagar Rao, Maharashtra state Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Secretary of Ministry of Shipping Shri Rajive Kumar, JNPT chairman Shri Anil Diggikar and Singapore High Commissioner Lim Thuan Kuan.



The new terminal will serve the important industrial and manufacturing centresand cities in India's largest hinterland, and play a role in supporting India's fast-growing economy, said the PSA statement.



BMCT will be completed in two phases with each phase of the terminal having an annual capacity of 2.4 million TEU. 



The development of Phase 1 is expected to be completed in three years. Upon full completion of both phases, BMCT will have a quay length of 2,000 metres, 24 state-of-the-art quay cranes and a designed capacity of 4.8 million TEU per annum.



PSA participates in 40 terminals in 16 countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas with flagship operations in PSA Singapore Terminals and PSA Antwerp.
