Marshall Islands flag flies over record tonnage - tops 125 million tons

THE ship registry of the Marshall Islands has topped the 125 million ton mark with 3,640 registered vessels as of the end of September, representing an increase of 25 per cent in tonnage since it hit 100 million tons in January 2014.

International Registries Inc and its affiliates (IRI), which provide administrative and technical support to the Marshall Islands registry, has been raising the number of technical experts available to shipowners and operators.

It has also opened its 27th worldwide office in Manila to meet demand, reported Hellenic Shipping News online.

"The fleet has been growing rapidly largely due to our ability to provide timely services through our decentralised model," said IRI president Bill Gallagher, who noted that 35 per cent of Marshall Island flagged seafarers are Filipinos.

The new Manila office will be able to "service crew documentation in that area in coordination with our Hong Kong and Mumbai offices thus speeding seafarers' documentation, said IRI head Annie Ng.
