Panama Canal vessel backlog builds, priority transits assigned by auction
THE Panama Canal has been suffering an increase in vessel backlog, and despite measures taken, the number of ships awaiting transit has grown to unacceptable levels, said the Panama Canal Authority.
In response to a growing concern regarding the extended waiting time being experience, Condition 1.a will be implemented effective October 12, reports GAC Hot Port News.
Applications for reserved transits under the above-mentioned condition will be received beginning 0900 hours, October 9, 2015. The booking slot available through the Auction Process, as well as the slots available for vessels less than 300 feet in length, will continue to be offered.
The Just-In-Time (JIT) transit service will remain at one (1) for each direction, as published in Advisory to Shipping A-31-2015, said the authority notice to trade.
Condition 1.a will remain in effect until the backlog returns to normal levels.
