Rotterdam's oldest container terminal closes due to lack of capacity
R0TTERDAM's oldest container terminal, the 1967-built Europe Container Terminals (ECT City) has shut down as it can no longer handle bigger ships and the volumes they generate, having recently docked its last vessel, the 4,000-TEU CMA CGM Sambhar.
The operator said it will relocate operations to its two deep sea terminals at the Maasvlakte, the 1984-built ECT Delta Terminal and the 2008-built Euromax Terminal Rotterdam. All staff deployed at the ECT City Terminal has been invited to work instead at the Maasvlakte facilty.
Both of the deep sea services that previously called at the ECT City Terminal will now call the ECT Delta Terminal, reported American Shipper.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority said it has plans to redevelop the site where the 65-hectare ECT City Terminal stood.
