Record 3.7 million TEU handled by Georgia ports as volume rises 17pc

THE Georgia Port Authority (GPA) announced that a record 3.7 million TEU crossed the docks at the Port of Savannah, a jump of 17 per cent, or more than half a million TEU, in the 2015 financial year ending in June.

The authority said that of the total volume 369,347 TEU were moved by rail, an 11 per cent increase over the previous year.

Between Savannah's Ocean Terminal and the Port of Brunswick, the GPA moved 714,008 units of autos and heavy machinery in FY15, also the highest volume ever.

The executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority, Curtis Foltz, told its annual general meeting that "thanks to new customers and growth in existing trade, automobile units increased by 29 per cent at Ocean Terminal."

Total cargo across all terminals reached 31.7 million tonnes for the year, a 7.8 per cent increase.

Mr Foltz described the financial year as "a year of extraordinary growth". "In fiscal year 2015, we experienced unprecedented growth, with west coast diversions to east coast ports, a recovering US economy and import market share gains leading to all-time highs in cargo volume," he said.
