Home Depot opens third and largest direct fulfilment centre

IN a move to cope with the continued growth in e-commerce sales, which account for five per cent of the company's total revenues, home improvement retailer, Home Depot, has opened a 1.6 million-square-foot direct fulfillment centre in Troy Township, Ohio, near Toledo and 100 kilometres from Detroit, which is the company's third and largest direct fulfilment centre.

In response to the continued growth in e-commerce, Home Depot opened two direct fulfillment centres last year, including a 1.1 million-square foot centre in Locust Grove, 100 kilometres south east of Atlanta and a 900,000-square-foot facility in Perris, 50 miles south west of Los Angeles.

These three are referred to as "direct" fulfillment centres because they fulfil and ship orders directly to customers who make online purchases, according to American Shipper.

Together, these three allow the retailer to deliver 90 per cent of online orders of regionally stocked parcel items in two business days with economical ground delivery service.

In addition, the company will open its Marietta Technology Centre, a 200,000-square foot office complex in Marietta, 20 kilometres north west of Atlanta in October.

The company will also open its third online customer service centre in November, to be located in Tempe, Arizona. The company already has online customer service centres in Ogden, Utah and Kennesaw, Georgia.

"These investments are advancing our interconnected retail strategy, which allows our customers to engage with Home Depot however they choose," Home Depot chairman, CEO and president Craig Menear said. "We're also pleased to contribute to the economic growth of these communities."
