Rickmers takes in first of three 9,300-TEUers, receives historic name
GERMANY's Rickmers Group has taken delivery of the first two in a series of three 9,300-TEU newbuilds, the company announced.
The energy-efficient containerships were built at the South Korean STX shipyard and are on long-term charter to CMA CGM. The Rickmers Group acquired the three containerships in April, when they were under construction.
The first of the three ships carries the historically significant name RC Rickmers. It is the seventh ship of this name, which can trace its heritage back to the founder of the Rickmers Shipyard.
"It is therefore a reference to the long history and shipping tradition of the Rickmers family. Rickmer Clasen Rickmers opened a shipbuilding workshop in Bremerhaven in 1834," said the company statement.
"The seventh RC Rickmers, a newbuild that has just been delivered, is a modern, large and energy-efficient containership," said Rickmers Group CEO Ignace Van Meenen.
"The long-term charter demonstrates that we are meeting ongoing market demand and keeping our fleet up to date. The new RC Rickmers represents the state of the art in shipbuilding technology, as her six namesakes did in their day," he said.
With its head offices in Hamburg and Singapore, the Rickmers Group is an international service provider for the shipping industry. It is represented by 18 own offices in eleven countries and more than 50 sales agents worldwide.
The Rickmers Group's business activities are grouped into three segments: Maritime Assets, Maritime Services and Rickmers-Linie.
