Smuggling of Chinese goods is rampant in India
THE seizure of Chinese goods valued at INR50 lakh (US$75,000) smuggled into India through a courier service has highlighted loopholes through which national and international courier and cargo service providers are sneaking contraband past state and central inspection agencies.
The Vigilance and Enforcement (V&E) authorities in India said the seized products were being smuggled through a private courier service company from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh.
According to The Hindu of Chennai, the key departments remained cool to the bust, making no effort to trace the origins of the racket.
Investigative agencies were in the dark about whether the goods arrived in India by air or by sea. The courier service management said contraband consignments arrive frequently and are despatched around the state by many distributors.
Though there were drugs, cosmetics, electronic goods, medicines and other products in the seized parcels, the Air Intelligence Unit, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation and the State Drug Control authorities have not registered any case.
V&E officials said they were surprised how the latest illegal container shipment passed border check posts in Khammam district in Telangana and Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh.
According to the courier service, many electronics goods and machinery were being smuggled into India regularly from China. In previous cases, police have seized even rocket launcher shells being shipped by Naxalite operatives through a transport company.
Vigil on transport of goods by courier and cargo agencies at the state and national levels continues to be porous. "There should be checks on goods transported by road, rail, water and air cargo companies. Slack vigil would be a serious threat to the country's security," said an officer.
