A-E off 22.9pc to US$456/TEU, off 5.6pc to USWC, off 9pc to USEC
SPOT rates for shipping containers from Asia to northern Europe fell 22.9 per cent to US$456 per TEU last Friday, according to Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) data.
Asia-Med rates fell 26.9 per cent to $448 per TEU while transpacific rates were down 5.6 per cent to $1,379 per FEU to the US west coast and off nine per cent to $2,427 per FEU to the US east coast.
Container freight rates have so far increased in eight weeks this year, but fallen in 28, Reuters reports. Last week's SCFI rates were 60 per cent lower year on year on the Asia-Europe trade lane and a 40 per cent lower on the transpacific .
US retailers are predicting a late peak season as companies experience stock-outs and rush to place orders for Christmas, "but that remains to be seen", remarked Newark's Journal of Commerce.
