38 LA-Long Beach striking port truckers beef up their picket lines

THIRTY-EIGHT "misclassified" independent contractor port truckers on strike against Los Angeles Pacific 9 Transportation have escalated picketing in their now 10-week old strike, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

The escalation occurs after six weeks of testimony before the California Division of Labour Standards Enforcement (DLSE), during which drivers said they had suffered US$6 million in "wage theft".

At issue are employment condition of drivers who prefer to be treated as regular employees rather than the "independent contractor" status preferred by their employers.

Striking drivers were joined on the picket line by drivers from recently-unionised drayage companies Shippers Transport Express and Eco Flo Transportation, who beefed up picket line in Carson, near Long Beach.

The escalation comes 18 months after the National Labour Relations Board (NLRB) announced a settlement agreement with the Pac 9 drivers that paved the way to unionisation.

"After an investigation, the NLRB determined there was sufficient evidence that Pac 9ˇs independent contractor drivers are employees entitled to federal labour law protection," said the report.
