Sweden eyes voluntary tonnage tax for Swedish ships next summer

A TONNAGE tax system has been proposed by the Swedish government in order for domestic shipping companies to compete under equal conditions with companies in other countries in Europe.

The Minister for Infrastructure Anna Johansson said at the Donso Shipping Meet the voluntary tax system, to which companies can become affiliated, will be introduced in the summer of 2016, reported GAC Hot Port News.

Swedish ships have been registered under flags of convenience for many years. Last year, the Swedish merchant fleet decreased by a further six ships, to a total of 320 vessels.

Sweship, formerly the Swedish Shipowners' Association, estimates that the implementation of a tonnage tax will over the next decade result in 300 new ships sailing under the Swedish flag and create 17,000 new jobs, according to Gothenburg port authorities.

The tonnage tax will make it possible for shipping companies to pay tax in Sweden according to fixed tariffs based on the net tonnage of their ships.
