Global air freight volume falls 0.6pc in July, but IATA sees better times ahead
GLOBAL air freight volumes in July declined 0.6 per cent year on year, but the International Air Transport Association (IATA) sees better times ahead in the second half.
The weakness in the air cargo sector is in line with declines in trade volume, mostly in emerging markets, and with Greater China showing more reliance on domestic product sources, said IATA.
Air cargo declines hit all regions except Africa and the Middle East, with the Americas posting the greatest drop with international freight ton kilometres falling five per cent.
North American airlines have suffered a significant shrinkage in traffic since shippers stopped their ocean to air switch now that west coast ports returned to normal.
Between January and July, air cargo volumes rose 2.9 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier.
On a seasonally adjusted basis for international freight only, freight ton kilometres have remained flat since the end of last year, and the market was two per cent down in July compared to December, IATA said.
Middle East growth of 10.8 per cent in July was lower than expected because of difficult yearly comparisons owing to the timing of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which took place mostly in July in 2014 but came round in June this year.
