CMA CGM, Bollore & CHEC to operate Kribi box terminal under development in Cameroon
FRENCH shipping group CMA CGM, as part of a consortium with, port operator Bollore Africa Logistics and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) have obtained a 25-year government concession to operate the Kribi Container Terminal in Cameroon that serves the African Atlantic coast and inland countries, including Chad and Central African Republic, following a successful bid.
Vessels from Europe and Asia are expected to call at the new 1.4 million TEU container terminal that will feature a 700-metre wharf on a 32-hectare platform made for ships with a draught of up to 16 metres. Initially, a 350-metre wharf will be operational within a few months, a statement from the French shipping company said.
It carried 1.2 million containers in 2014 from and to Africa and "aims at reinforcing its maritime services with the opening of new trades and calls, developing the creation and modernization of its ports infrastructures, extending its solutions for intermodal transport so as to deliver cargo inland and creating new logistic platforms offering a wide range of additional services," the statement said.
Group executive officer, Farid Salem, said: "CMA CGM and its partners will make Kribi containers terminal an international terminal which will bring dynamism to the Cameroonian economy. With this new terminal, Cameroon will be at the heart of international trade."
