Virgin Atlantic Cargo volume up 33pc ex Dubai in H1 amid USWC port crisis

VIRGIN Atlantic Cargo posted a year-on-year 33 per cent increase in cargo out of Dubai to 2.4 million kilogrammes in the first half of the year.

This growth was attributed new US routes and extra frequencies to offer alternative transportation modes while the labour dispute at US west coast ports disrupted cargo flows in the first quarter. 



The airline also achieved strong increases in the volume of cargo destined for its hub in London. 



The airline's additional daily frequency to New York JFK and the launch of its new Atlanta route both contributed significantly to the increase, reported the American Journal of Transportation.



"Our increased capacity to the US has made a big difference and was particularly important during this period as customers looked for alternative routes into the US to avoid the port disruptions there," said Virgin Atlantic Cargo vice president John Lloyd. 



"We have also seen improvements in our service levels this year after they were impacted towards the end of 2014 during our ground handler's relocation in Dubai," he said,
