Mombasa docks its biggest ship, 5,466-TEU Clemens Schulte after dredging
THE Port of Mombasa has docked its biggest ship to date, the Maersk-operated, 5,466-TEU Clemens Schulte, which has started calling at ports in East Africa and is fitted with 650 reefer plugs.
The ship discharged 1,600 TEU and loaded 1,150 TEU on her maiden call.
"The arrival of the ship signifies yet another benefit of the completed capacity expansion projects. The dredging of port entry channel to the depth of 15 metres and widening of turning basin to 300 metres at its narrowest point," Kenya Ports Authority said in a statement.
"The other successful key project is the construction of the 240-metre Berth 19 which increased the total quay length of Mombasa container terminal to 840 metres and the container terminal's capability to accommodate three third-generation container vessels at a go," it said.
"Both dredging and construction of berth 19 have attracted larger vessels to the port of Mombasa, boosting customers' confidence, especially shipping lines," KPA added, reported Kampala's East African Business Week.
