ICAO calls September 29 assembly to discuss July's lithium battery meeting
THE UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will hold the 3rd ULD [unit loading device] Regulatory Forum to discuss the outcome of July's 3rd International Multidisciplinary Lithium Battery Transport Coordination Meeting on September 29 - 30 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Montreal.
The July meeting in Montreal considered methods to ensure that any fire incident involving lithium batteries does not create a hazard outside the package.
The topics for consideration were shipping lithium ion cells and batteries at a reduced state of charge, enhanced packaging, which may include items such as gel packs and intumescent coatings.
The September forum will discuss industry compliance with the US FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 120-85A on Cargo Operations, guidance on the application of Fire Containment Cover (FCC) and Fire Resistant Container (FRC) for cargo compartment fire protection.
Also discussed will be lessons learnt from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports on Bagram 747 crash in 2013 and whether complying with IATA ULD Regulations would effectively prevent accidents due to improper ULD operations.
