Hapag-Lloyd invests millions in 6,000 reefer boxes for South America
GERMAN container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has ordered 6,000 reefer containers with a total capacity of 12,000 TEU to realise bigger gains in the South American trades, as a viable alternative to the main east-west routes are still being flooded with surplus box ship capacity.
The carrier said the investment was valued in the millions of US dollars. One thousand of the new containers will be fitted with controlled-atmosphere technology, designed to prolong the shelf life of fruit and veg. Deliveries of the new boxes will start in a few weeks, reported Seatrade Maritime News.
"With the new reefers, we are expanding our leading position even further in this specialised business with its specific demands and will, thus, benefit from the growing reefer market," said CEO Rolf Habben Jansen.
"With our enhanced reefer fleet, we are ideally positioned for the Latin American trade, which is an important part of the reefer business, right on time for the opening of the expanded Panama Canal next year."
The shipping line strengthened its presence in the Latin American trades this year following its merger with the container shipping activities of Chile's CSAV.
In April the European carrier ordered five 10,500-TEU ships with a capacity to transport up to 2,100 reefer boxes each.
