Allowing Open Skies Policy could bring Ghana's pan-African aviation boom

SHOULD Ghana go ahead with the implementation of an Open Skies Policy, it would position the country as a key aviation hub for Africa.

According to Nigerian travel consultant, Iketsi Uko, who was speaking at the Ethiopian Airlines' (ET) agency awards in Accra, statistics indicate that the policy could lead to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs in Ghana alone in the market sector.

Ghana and Rwanda are among 15 African countries that have indicated a readiness to introduce the policy.

"Ghana is increasingly becoming one of the most important air traffic hubs on the African continent, that is why all the airlines are now operating here and this means that the country is doing something right," the consultant said, the Ghana Graphic reported.

Mr Uko stressed the need for countries in Africa to open their skies to develop a free market economy for the aviation industry.

Part of the objective of the Open Skies Policy is to minimise government intervention in the air freight industry, as well as in scheduled and charter passenger flights.
