Air China to start Beijing-Johannesburg service at end-October
SINCE starting service to Africa in the 1970s, Air China is re-entering the market with Beijing-Johannesburg non-stop flights from October 29.
The airline will also start Beijing-Addis Ababa service this year.
Flights CA867/8 Beijing-Johannesburg are to be operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (outbound) and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (inbound).
The outbound flight departs from Beijing at 23:15 local time, and arrives in Johannesburg at 07:35 the following day. The inbound flight departs from Johannesburg at 11:50 and arrives in Beijing at 07:30. The flights are to be operated with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
"Today, the 'One Belt, One Road' initiative proposed by the Chinese government will bring new opportunities of cooperation between China and Africa," a statement from the airline distributed by PRNewswire said, adding that its Beijing-Johannesburg service will be a "Silk Road in the Air."
South Africa accounts for one third of Africa's GDP. It is also China's biggest trading partner in Africa. Currently, 1.2 million Chinese live in South Africa. The latest statistics from Chinese customs suggest that in 2014, the China-Africa import and export volumes amounted to US$221.88 billion, hitting an all-time high, and up 5.5 per cent on the previous year.
In addition to the two new routes to Africa, the airline also started Chengdu-Colombo service in February, Hangzhou-Osaka service in March, Tianjin-Dalian-Sapporo service in April, Beijing-Minsk-Budapest in May, Beijing-Melbourne non-stop service in June, and Beijing-Hakodate service in July.
As of July the Chinese carrier has a fleet of 523 passenger aircraft and freighters, mainly purchased from Boeing and Airbus.
