9,580-TEU MSC Asya joins Baltic feeder service - biggest ship ever

MEDITERRANEAN Shipping Company has deployed the 9,580-TEU MSC Asya, on a weekly Baltic feeder loop connecting Antwerp and Bremerhaven to Gdynia, Poland and Klaipeda in Lithuania.

She is the biggest ship to-date to operate this type of feeder route, although she is used only on an ad hoc basis and at half capacity, alongside the 3,398-TEU MSC Japan.

The Loop 10 feeder service is usually operated with two ships of 3,000-4,000 TEU, turning in two weeks, reported Alphaliner.

In world's number two carrier has in the past "parked" surplus mainline ships on temporary feeder assignments, including the 8,089-TEU MSC Charleston, which in June joined two successive rotations on the same feeder loop, while another surplus vessel, the 6,477-TEU Miramarin, also performed a one-off rotation in July.

It is worth noting that ships of 8,000-9,500 TEU are too large to call at Klaipeda or Gdynia ports with a full load as the maximum draft is between 14.5 and 15.5 metres. At Klaipeda's Smelte Terminal, the draft is 13.2 metres, whereas the BCT Terminal at Gdynia is limited to 11.7 metres.
