Rotterdam to try free truck tyre checks to detect low pressure dangers
TRUCKS exiting the terminal of APM Terminals Rotterdam MVII on Maasvlakte 2 will be able to check their tyre pressure quickly and free of charge through sensors embedded in the road, in a bid to maintain port accessibility and reduce polluting emissions.
When a truck passes over the sensors at a low speed, a smiley shows the driver that the tyre pressure is good. The measuring device is an initiative of the Port of Rotterdam Authority in collaboration with the Verkeersonderneming.
The trial is in line with the port authority's research conducted by ZTA Expertise, commissioned by the Verkeersonderneming, that found two trucks have a flat tyre every 24-hours in the Rotterdam region. Forty per cent of all breakdowns on the roads are the result flat tyres, with accidents and breakdowns involving trucks causing traffic jams.
Furthermore, tyres at the right pressure not only last longer, but lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to tyres with pressure that is sub-par.
