APM Terminals acquires Italian Vado reefer terminal west of Genoa

APM TERMINALS has acquired all the shares in Reefer Terminal SpA, 40 kilometres west of Genoa, the largest reefer facility on the Mediterranean with 600,000 pallets passing through its gates annually, for an undisclosed sale price.

The terminal also handles general cargo and shipping containers (275,000 TEU) and is equipped with 510 reefer plugs, with 14.5 metres along side and a 465-metre quay, reports New York's Marine Link.

The terminal operator earlier acquired the Vado Ligure Reefer Terminal as part of a plan to create new supply chains to markets in northern Italy, southern France, Switzerland and Bavaria.

The Reefer Terminal is located adjacent to the construction site of the Vado port project that is scheduled to open in January 2018 with 800,000 TEU annual capacity and a 17-metre draft.

Reefer Terminal will continue to operate as a terminal specialising in the discharge and warehousing of fresh fruit and vegetables.

"The integration of the Vado Reefer Terminal with our new, future semi-automated container terminal enhances the logistics options for businesses and the shipping lines calling the Ligurian coast, serving all of northern Italy and beyond," said Vado CEO Carlo Merli.

"We are building Italy's port of the future with ideal access to Turin and northern Italy manufacturing zones as well as consumer markets. Equally important, we will have the best port system and product in the market capable of serving container vessels, reefer vessels, ro-ro and breakbulk vessels."

The Vado Reefer Terminal has four railway tracks which will be linked to the off-dock rail facility being constructed as part of the container terminal with direct access to interior destinations through an intermodal rail service.

The Vado terminal will be the only port in Italy able to handle megaships of over 18,000 TEU.
