Global air cargo up 2.6pc in June as revenue falls 9.3pc in first half
THE global air cargo sector has collectively achieved year-on-year volume growth of 2.6 per cent in June, up from 1.8 per cent the previous year, while overall yield in US dollar terms declined two per cent compared to May. First-half air cargo revenue plummeted 9.3 per cent.
Africa, up five per cent, and the Middle East along with South Asia (MESA) up 6.4 per cent, were again among the best performing regions in terms of airlifted volumes, reported Amsterdam's WorldACD (Air Cargo Data).
What changed markedly was the performance of the origin Europe, with volume rising by 5.9 per cent in June. Asia Pacific's volumes were flat at just 0.4 per cent growth. Incoming air cargo increased most in MESA (up 9.8 per cent) and North America (+6.9 per cent), against last year.
"Looking at a somewhat longer period, we see that the demand driving air cargo volumes differs considerably from one product category to another," said the WorldACD report.
The growth in perishables was largest to MESA (+59 per cent) and Asia Pacific (+35 per cent). Perishables transport to Europe and North America lagged behind with growth figures of 15 per cent.
In pharmaceuticals, Asia Pacific (+74 per cent) and MESA (+66 per cent) absorbed most of the growth. Looking at the total demand, the destinations MESA and North America both grew with 17 per cent, while Europe (+3 per cent) and Latin America (-7 per cent) clearly lost appetite.
