Expanded Suez Canal transits first 3 ships as dredging almost done
THE dredging works of the Egypt's Suez Canal to deepen the channel to 18.5 metres and widen to 250 metres is 99.4 per cent complete, said the canal authority.
The US$8 billion project now provides AP Moller-Maersk Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) direct access to the shipping canal's northern end.
Three vessels heading in each direction, operated by APL, Maersk and UASC and including the 8,450-TEU Maersk Sheerness, have become the first to transit from the Port of Suez to Port Said escorted by military helicopters and naval vessels as the Islamist insurgency rages in the Sinai Peninsula, reported Sentinel Republic.
At the launch of the project less than on year ago, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi directed the work period for the project be speeded up from three years to one, presenting a huge challenge for the consortium in charge of the dredging due to the sheer scale of the work involved as well as with the difficulties associated with management, manpower and the logistics of the project.
