Japan's Osaka suffers double-digit free fall in cargo volume
THE Japanese port of Osaka saw its cargo traffic plummet by 12.8 per cent in April from a year earlier to 6.711 million tonnes, as both domestic trade and foreign trade dived at double-digit rates, according to the municipal government.
Of the total, 2.923 million tonnes came from foreign trade, down 11.8 per cent year on year, and the remaining 3.788 million tonnes came from domestic trade, down 13.5 per cent, reported IHS Maritime 360.
During April - the latest month data was available - export cargo rose 2.3 per cent to 886,612 tonnes, but imports decreased by 16.8 per cent to 2.03 million tonnes.
Osaka handled 186,395 TEU in April, down 15.8 per cent from the same month last year, including 162,510 TEU of foreign trade, down 18.1 per cent from a year earlier, and 23,885 TEU of domestic trade, up 4.3 per cent.
Exports fell by 18.9 per cent to 74,785 TEU, and imports dived 17.5 per cent to 87,725 TEU.
