South African Airways ends ban on hunting trophies with state blessing
SOUTH African Airways has rescinded its recently imposed ban on transporting hunting trophies of elephants, rhinos and lions, Bloomberg reported.
The airline discussed its ban with government officials and industry groups and agreed to rescind it after imposing it in April at the behest of anti-hunting lobbies such as the World Wildlife Fund.
But Fast Feed, the Professional Hunter's Association of South Africa (PHASA), said the country's Department of Environmental Affairs intervened to influence the airline's policy change.
PHASA argues that hunting and the trophy-hunting industry play a significant role in South African conservation.
Emirates previously issued and all-out ban on carrying hunting trophies, regardless of whether the animal was considered endangered. Delta Air Lines was being lobbied to follow suit with a similar ban.
The goal of the bans was to make hunting less appealing since the hunter couldn't bring his/her trophy home.
