50 tractor trailers can fit in New York's first truck park at JFK airport

NEW YORK's Airport Plazas has announced the opening of the first public truck parking facility in the city at JFK airport.

The truck park comes at a crucial time when the ban of 53-foot trailers on the Van Wyck has been lifted and now permits a more convenient access for trucks to JFK Airport and the surrounding areas.

The facility accommodates 50 tractor trailers with plans for further expansion. The initial period is free and then after 20 minutes there are incremental charges that max out at US$59 for a full day.

The company has worked with NYCDOT, NYCEDC, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and other agencies to bring a solution to a grossly underserved market.

"I was amazed when we started the project that there was no public truck parking facility in NYC. The fact that the blogs directed fellow truckers to a facility in NJ was amazing," said Airport Plazas vice president Stefano Pascucci.

The truck park is in the heart of the cargo area at JFK International airport and is directly across the street from the newly built travel plaza that features high-speed diesel dispensers.

It also boasts of a 10,000-square foot food court with a 7-Eleven, Wendy's, Qdoba and Max's Pizza. The plaza also features an urgent care facility travellers can visit when looking for medical treatment.
