Air cargo capacity needed to keep up with Cambodian manufacturing
GROWTH in Cambodian manufactures will require more capacity building and human resource development, Cambodia's deputy Prime Minister Sok An told a regional joint civil aviation committee.
"Air transport has played a critically important role in the world's economic activities, and it remains one of the fastest growing industries of our time," he told delegates from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam in Phnom Penh.
"All countries increasingly depend on aviation to maintain or stimulate economic growth," Mr An said, reported the Khmer Times.
Mr An also cited International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) statistics which showed that over three billion passengers used the global air transport network for business and tourism purposes in 2013. The number is projected to reach 6.4 billion by 2030.
Meanwhile, research by US aviation giant Boeing forecasts that world air cargo traffic will grow by 4.7 per cent a year over the next 20 years, he said.
"While these figures illustrate an exponential growth of civil aviation industry, the capacity of existing air navigation systems to accommodate [the growth in traffic] is limited, which may adversely impact the industry and related sectors," Mr An said.
