Munich's 3rd runway survives eco-court challenge, but headwinds remain

LEIPZIG Federal Administrative Court quashed an appeal filed by eco lobby Bund Naturschutz that held that the planned third runway for Munich airport violated environmental and noise control ordinances.

Lufthansa applauded the decision to increase capacity at the airport that is home to its second biggest hub after Frankfurt, reported Atlanta area Air Cargo World.

Munich Airport authority Flughafen Munchen Gesellschaft (FMG) also plans to build a new satellite facility in April 2016, which will be operated jointly by FMG and Lufthansa.

Despite the Leipzig court victory, the third runway still faces oppostion including a lost plebicite that was voted on by Munich residents in 2012.

Then there are three main government shareholders in the airport - the German federal government, the state of Bavaria and the City of Munich - have not yet agreed on a final plan for who question the expansion.
