Pactl first half volumes up 11pc, hit new 762,104-ton record

SHANGHAI Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminal Co Ltd (Pactl) posted an 11 per cent year-on-year first half increase in cargo volume to 762,104 tons.

Pactl imports rose 14.6 per cent to 315,044 tons in the first half year on year while international import volume rose 15 per cent to 290,317 tons, and domestic inbound throughput increased 10.6 per cent to 24,727 tons.

Outbound cargo grew 8.37 per cent to 447,060 tons. International exports were up 7.63 per cent to 420,109 tons while domestic exports increased 21.48 per cent to 26,951 tons.

"We have also been able to increase our market share at Pudong," said Pactl vice president Lutz Grzegorz.

Pactl processed 49.3 per cent of the air cargo handled at Pudong during the first six months of 2015, gaining 10 new customer airlines in the process.

But air freight load factors have now fallen to levels not seen since 2009 as the weakening trade activity combines with the surplus belly capacity flooding into the market, according to IATA.

This has cut prices with rates falling to less than US$3 per kilogramme, according to Drewry Sea & Air Shipper Insight.

Nonetheless, But Mr Grzegorz was upbeat: "We've been able to continue the strong performance that we achieved in 2014. We've also been able to develop our customer base, particularly in the domestic market. We therefore achieved a strong increase in domestic exports during the second quarter."
