Tanjung Pelepas looks to expand capacity to 15 million TEU

MALAYSIA's top container Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is preparing to expand its capacity from the current 12.5 million TEU to 15 million TEU within five years to remain competitive, reports Seatrade Maritime 360.

"We have submitted our papers to the government to gain their support financially in terms of capital dredging to expand our current channel," said PTP deputy CEO Hanif Hamid.

Mr Hanif said under the 11th Malaysian Plan, there should be some "ports money" for the industryand hoped that the company would be able to convince the government that PTP is viable.

"In order for us to expand, we need to dredge as the existing depth of our channel is 16 metres and to accommodate the largest container vessels without any tidal restrictions, there has to be 18.5 metres.

"Furthermore, there is also an urgent need to widen the channel from the current 400 metres to 600 metres to prevent bottlenecks and congestion," he said.

As of June, the container port handled 4.5 million TEU and is on track to achieve its target of nine million TEU by the end of the year
