Emirates resumes flights to Erbil, in embattled Iraqi Kurdistan
DUBAI's Emirates is to resume service to Erbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan from August 15 to benefit the wider business community in the war-torn region.
The main commodities flown will be mobile phones, telephones, hand-held equipment, laptops and semiconductors.
Flights to Erbil will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, using an Airbus 330-200 initially offering 17 tonnes of belly hold space and later 100 tonnes of cargo capacity on a Boeing 777 freighter.
"We have in northern Iraq and upon a detailed risk assessment, we decided to recommence our services to Erbil," said Emirates vice president Sheikh Majid Al Mualla.
"As a precautionary measure, we are redirecting our flight path to and from Erbil, resulting in longer flight times."
The service departs on Monday from Dubai at 0645hrs arriving in Erbil at 0920hrs, returning at 1045hrs and arriving in Dubai at 1455hrs. Flights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday depart Dubai at 1315hrs arriving in Erbil at 1550hrs. The return flight departs Erbil at 1725hrs and arrives in Dubai at 2135hrs.
