LA-LB port truckers strike against 160-truck Pac9 Transportation
LA-LONG BEACH harbour truckers are in Teamster-assisted strike to protest their alleged misclassification as private contractors when they feel they should be treated as employees.
The drivers say they will go on an indefinite strike while they continue their legal fight to recoup wages they believe they deserve and were unfairly withheld by the company.
The strike began at the Pac9 company's yard in Carson, California, and spread to Los Angeles and Long Beach marine terminals.
Said striking driver Pedro Martinez: "The company refuses to recognise us as employees, refuses to provide us with safe and reliable trucks and refuses to improve our work environment."
Said striking driver Fariborz Rostamian: "I'm tired of the misclassification, and I won't keep paying for that truck because it's too dangerous. This has to end."
Said the Pac9 company website: "Established in 2004 with two trucks, Pac9 has built a company that has 160 trucks and drays 100,000 containers and trailers to and from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as the southern California BNSF, UP and ICTF rail ramps.
"In our 100,000 square feet of warehouse space we transload, store, pick and pack, and provide other customer directed services. Our local, regional, and national truckload fleet of over 50 trucks completes our end-to-end offering." it said.
