Chennai air freight station vows 20pc in cost savings via speed, efficiency

CUSTOMS clearance of imports will become faster with the city airport moving the operations to a private air freight station at Irungattukottaim, reports the Times of India.

Trucks will pick up cargo from the aircraft and move it to the freight station at Irungattukottai on the Chennai-Bangalore Highway and 34 kilometres from downtown Chennai.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a licence to operate the freight station at the existing inland container depot to decongest the airport's cargo terminal.

At the freight station, customs clearance will be quick and importers will save 20 per cent to 25 per cent of the cost due to speed and efficiency, airport officials said.

The move comes after importers complained of delays in clearing consignments due to infrastructure limitations at the airport.

"It takes six days for a consignment to be cleared if it is done inside the cargo terminal, but the time can be cut to three days if it is done at the air freight station," said an official.

"The station will have facilities for post-shipment and pre-shipment formalities including customs clearance," he said.

Indev Logistics managing director Xavier Britto, who has set up the facility, said the station will handle consignments of components for automobile, electronics, electrical and textile industry.

He also said agreements will be signed with Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific." The freight station has been set up in Inland Container Depot where containers from ships are handled.

The clearance for the freight station was given in 2011. It took three years for the unit to get connectivity for online filing of papers.

The freight station will be beneficial for the airport because consignments for other cities can also be cleared and sent by road.

Chennai airport handled 222,000 tonnes of freight in 2014-15, which was less than one per cent increase over the previous year.

The airport had been losing out to Bengaluru in terms of cargo. Officials hope to reverse this trend by efficient handling of cargo at the air freight station.
