US transport sector outlook stable, but faces challenges: Fitch

STABLE operational and financial performance will remain intact for the US transport sector for the second half, though the second half still faces challenges, says Fitch Ratings' mid-year outlook.

Ports throughout the US are expected to see continued modest improvement for the remainder of 2015, with the west coast labour unrest now resolved.

Though related congestion has largely dissipated, shippers are still weary and may keep some diverted cargo at east and Gulf Coast ports to diversify their delivery options in case there is future disruption, the report said.

Stability is also in the cards for toll roads throughout the US. Fitch anticipates traffic to rise by two per cent after the severe winter that hit the northeast and Midwest and now that fuel prices have normalised, reported American Journal of Transportation.

US airports have traffic growth "solidifying," however, increases at "many large hub airports will remain constrained due to capital programmes and associated borrowings even though traffic volumes are improving".
