India's richest state eyes US$16 billion push to fix Mumbai infrastructure

MAHARASTRAS, India's richest state, plans to spend US$16 billion over five to six years on revamping infrastructure and reviving dormant projects related to Mumbai's airport, seaport as well as road and highway access.

In Mumbai, Maharashtra's biggest city and India's financial capital, the state government intends to revive many dormant projects.

"It should not have waited so long. It is late. But now we will try to catch up," said Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Mr Fadnavis, aged 44, who last year became the first member of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party to run the state, said he had accelerated the infrastructure plans with help from the central government.

That includes, for example, for a new Mumbai airport, which is scheduled to see its first flight in 2019.

"In four months, we got all eight clearances," he said, adding that a bidder for the project would be chosen by the end of the summer.

The airport development is part of efforts to move Mumbai away from the sea, alleviating roads and public transport that are already clogged with activities of the city's 20 million people.
