Cargolux adds extra London flight as ferry strike hits Calais-Dover link

A FRENCH ferry workers' strike at Calais, limiting service to Dover has prompted Cargolux to run an airlift between Luxemburg and London-Stansted.

The additional flight is expected to carry more than 100 tons via Luxemburg airport as waterborne ferry service is still limited despite the lifting of the blockade, reports London's Logistics Business Review.

The cargo industry has been under immense pressure after the staff of cross channel ferry firm MyFerryLink launched a strike ahead of job cuts and began blocking the port of Calais and the entrance to the Channel Tunnel.

Kent police stated: "The Port of Calais remains affected by ongoing industrial action in France. Whilst ferry services to and from the Port of Dover continue to be affected, the Port of Calais has started to allow sailings to enter the port.

Separately, Cargolux is also planning to raise the frequency to Johannesburg later this year, after launching a new service to Cairo last month.
