US 3PLs transport 1.2pc less and suffer 7.8pc revenue decline

SHIPMENTS handled by US third party logistics providers fell 1.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2015 against the last quarter of 2014, according to a study by the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA).

The TIA, the US representative group in the International Federation of Freight Forwarder Association, said this decline was accompanied by a 7.8 per cent quarter to quarter fall in revenue.

In the first quarter truckload fell 1.3 per cent and intermodal shipments dropped 2.1 per cent, compared to the previous quarter, while LTL shipments rose 2.3 per cent.

Revenues were down across the board, with truckload and intermodal both falling eight per cent and LTL sliding 1.1 per cent for the quarter, reported American Shipper.

Compared to the first quarter of 2014, total shipments increased 11.3 per cent, driven primarily by a 12 per cent increase in truckload volumes as intermodal fell two per cent and LTL shipments fell four per cent.

The report includes data representing 1.53 million shipments and US$2.95 billion in total revenues for the first quarter of 2015, TIA said in a statement.

Said TIA president Robert Voltmann: "The report indicates that 3PLs continue to broaden their services. The percentage of 3PLs offering intermodal and LTL continues to increase each quarter and 100 per cent of all 3PLs report activity in truck loads."
