Wan Hai beats Maersk for on-time reliability in SeaIntel survey

TAIWAN's Wan Hai Lines beat out Maersk as the most reliable in a new study by SeaIntel analysts, reports Lloyd's List.

Wan Hai moved from third to first place, putting Maersk Line into second place in the survey checking on-time year-on-year performance of the top 20 shipping lines from March to May.



The worse performing alliance was CKYHE, three of whose members - "K" Line, Yan Ming and Hanjin - saw a steep decline in on-time performance.



Ocean Three members CMA CGM and UASC also fell several places in the rankings, with UASC dropping from fourth place to 17th and CMA CGM dropping from ninth to 16th, despite a 0.1 per cent increase in its on-time deliveries.



Ocean Three alliance partner CSCL kept its 13th place, despite raising its performance by 3.5 percentage points.



The rankings were affected by the strong performance of four of the G6 partners, SeaIntel said.



APL, MOL, OOCL and NYK rose in the rankings to put them all in the top 10 in 2015.



Looking across a longer timescale, SeaIntel found that the historic best performers, Maersk and Hamburg Sud, have been in a "steady and almost parallel decline in schedule reliability" from 2012 to 2015.



"Despite the gradual but consistent decline in performance, both carriers have maintained their year-to-date rankings in the top two," SeaIntel said. 



"Either the distance to the other carriers has been so great that the decline of Maersk and Hamburg Sud did not shift any rankings or the other carriers have experienced equal or greater declines in performance."



Meanwhile, Wan Hai has been moving rapidly up the ranks, from 16th to third, despite its on-time performance actually falling from 78.7 per cent in 2012 to 77.3 per cent in the year to date.



And while Wan Hai made top showing for the March-May period, its third place in the year-to-date league pointed either to a marked improvement since March, or big declines by Maersk and Hamburg Sud.



"While Maersk has not seen an actual deterioration of performance over the 2015 year to date, it could be argued that its entry into the 2M alliance may have had a negative impact on the performance level it could have achieved if it had not entered the alliance with MSC, a carrier that historically has performed quite poorly on schedule reliability," SeaIntel said.



For Hamburg Sud, the fall in performance is attributed to its entry in to the east-west trades.



"Having teamed up with Ocean Three on the east-west trades, Hamburg Sud has been hit very hard by the challenges the alliance has faced during its start-up, where especially the transpacific trade has proved very difficult in terms of on-time performance," SeaIntel said.
