Construction starts on new container terminal in east end Montreal
CONSTRUCTION of the new east end Viau Terminal in Montreal to be completed by the end of next year on the site of the old Vickers yard that built and repaired Liberty ships in World War II.
Phase one will raise the port's capacity 350,000 TEU a year to add to its 1.4 TEU annual throughput.
The second phase of construction will add a further 250,000 TEU of capacity, according to Logistec Corporation, the parent company of Termont Montreal Inc, which will operate the Viau Terminal, reported American Shipper.
Termont already operates the Maisonneuve Terminal which is further east, also on the island, and handy to the Louis Hippolyte Tunnel and the TransCanada Highway.
Termont will invest US$42 million in new equipment at the Viau Terminal over a two-year period.
Investments will include two ship-to-shore postpanamax cranes, five rubber-tyre gantry cranes, six reach stackers
There will also be electrically-powered reefer stations, tractors, trailers and lifters. The facility will also offer on-terminal rail operations.
